A few years ago I took a class from Suzanne Marshall. After her needle turn applique is done, she outlines everything in a strand or two of black embroidery floss. I just can't remember if she does this through the single layer of background fabric or if she puts a thin batting behind her applique. Anyone know??

I realize the batting will probably not give it more dimension but it would give something more for the needle to bite.

I don't know her method, but the only time I outline anything is when I want more contrast with the background fabric.
I'm not sure but you might want to look at a U tube tut on trapunto.

I back my hand embroidery with sewable lightweight interfacing to give the fabric more stability and hide the connecting threads shadowing through. Would that be enough?

If you are a member at The Quilt Show #203 is about her. I only have a free membership there so can't view the whole thing.

In Ricky Tims article it mentions using embroidery stitching around the appliqués so that would lead me to believe there was no backing added after the appliqué but you never know.... https://www.rickytims.com/1636-quilt...zanne-marshall

I do quite alot of needleturn applique, and I think if I were to do this I would use a very fine muslin or as faykilgore does and use a lightweight sewable interfacing which would stop the fabric puckering around the shape. Not seen this done before but looks very effective.

Very interesting; I would never thought of outlining the applique and yet, what a difference it makes.

I'm doing embroidery on applique flower shapes. We hold down with a zigzag of invisible thread around the edges, then embroidery on top. The centres go through one layer, the outlines go through batting and a muslin sandwich.the later embroidery is refered to as quilting.ie chain quilting which is done just off the edge through all layers if you can. Taught by Liz Hands UK Quilter.



my avatar is reverse hand turned applique which I put a fancy stitch from my machine all around the edges as I disliked the stark nature of the edge just hand turned.
