I use pins; do not baste. However, I also use the spray adhesive, 505, and that works really well. It takes a little practice and patience to get the wrinkles out, but it is a great alternative to pinning.

Either thread baste or Elmer's washable school glue. No pins for me.
Here's a great tutorial on basting with school glue.

I'm a newbie, and don't trust myself to pin-without-puckers, so I used June Tailor's spray baste. Worked like a charm!
(FWIW, I have plenty of space, so I do it on the floor. I LOVE this part of quilting, actually, because of the 'flattening' process.)
I do put in a few pins here & there afterward, "just in case" it does decide to shift, but neither of my first two moved at all while I was quilting with the spray baste. LOVE THAT STUFF!

I tape the backing down on a 4x8' plywood, layer the batting, put on the top and pin using the curved pins that have also gotten the plastic "backs" to save my nails. I use a grapefruit spoon to get the pin point back up for closing. Then I baste. It's a lot of work, but I hate it when things get messed up in the quilting.

I either use the curved safety pins about palm-width apart OR I use straight pins with pinmoores. (well, my pinmoores are actually disposable ear plugs) I don't like hand-basting for machine quilting because the basting thread could (would) get stitched down and I don't want to have errand stitches running through my quilting. My FMQ "sucks" enough as is. lol
Forgot to mention: Small projects are spray basted using the 505.

I have pinned and gotten folds in the backing while quilting. I have hand-basted closely and gotten folds in the backing while quilting. I now use basting spray on all my projects and haven't had a single fold or pucker and am never going back.
