There is a video done by Sharon Schamber showing how she hand quilts without a hoop: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDcLMiR2SAo

There's also a tutorial on this board that Andrea "Borntohandquilt" put together that shows how she hand quilts.

If you have any questions, ask - there are more hand quilters lurking here than you might think.

Good for you for jumping right in there with some of the rest of us on handquilting and hand piecing.
I have handquilted 1 king size, 2 full bed size quilts and
several wallhangings, tablerunners. I also are in the middle of hand piecing grandma's flower garden full size.
It is about one half done. Also plan on handquilting it too.

Go for it! I'm a self-taught hand quilter. I learned by watching Simply Quilts w/Alex Anderson. Try looking at some of her videos as well from HGTV. I find it very relaxing and theraputic.

I can't help you, but there are several members here who do only hand quilting, so hopefully they'll see your post. I would like to learn, just to say, yes I know how. LOL

You can successfully quilt without a hoop as long as you can bet your hand under the quilt.
Do you do any hand sewing or have you avoided that all these years.
If you can't find someone, and I recommend you find someone who does it "the old fashioned way" that is without gimmics and specal tools Just pushing the needle thru the three layers and stick your finger.
Suggest you practice by getting a piece of 1/8 or 1/16th inch gingham check. This will help keep stitches small and in a straight line. A very good book is "How To Learn Hand Quilting in One Day" (and practice the rest of your life) by Nancy Bennan Daniels.

WOW thanks for all of the feedback. I recieved an Amish quilt as a wedding present so I was going to call the quilt shop that sold the quilt and see if they have any leads for resources to ask.

I will have to get a picture of the quilt, it's made out of old clothes, and drapes for the borders and sashing. :) And she used a pencil and a string to make the quilting pattern, just half circles in rows.

I can't wait to get it all repaired. :)
