I use a floor frame. This is how I started and have not tried hand quilting without a frame. I had to learn in a hurry to loosen the tension tho. You should quilt how you want to and what feels the most comfortable for you and enjoy the journey.

Please explain about the milners or straw needles. What are they and where do you get them?

Straw or milners are long thin needles. I used mine for needle-turn applique. You can purchase then at LQS or online. They come in different sizes.
