I rock my quilt vs the needle as well. I find I can do this easily in a hoop as well as long as the sandwich is loose enough.

I love my Harry Barnett's laptophoop! It is easily removable from a floor stand (he used powerful magnets to hold the hoop to the floor stand). I use a 14" hoop. You should check out his site...laptophoops.com

I use a hoop. I have several sizes, depending on what I am hand sewing on.
