Rayon is embroidery thread and is notorious for being very tender. I don't use it for any kind of sewing or quilting for precisely this reason.

I think 50 is what people use for piecing, but it has always broken more easily for me than other 50-weights. I looked on their site awhile back, and they were recommending the 40-wt for quilting. I believe that.

Aurifil is 2 ply 50 wt so thinner then 3 ply 50 wt. Masterpiece use to be 2 ply 50 wt but was changed to 3 ply 50 wt a few years ago. I like Masterpiece for piecing and Wonderfill Konfetti if I want cotton thread. I bought several cones of Maya 120 from Wawak and so far I am liking that too.

yep, I was using it for embroidery as I am trying to relearn embroidery again. I did a lot of it in the early 2000's on my Viking D1. I got a Bernina 590 and am trying to relearn it so my stash of RA rayon threads is not new either. I am amazed by the amount of editing installed into the Bernina now and I suppose that is the same for all Brands now. The Black rayon basically shredded itself. I know speeds during embroidery are pretty fast and I have now slowed my machine down. The rayon thread has a beautifil sheen on embroidery. I was doing a Laurel Birch design of Mythical Horses.

the only thread I know to be sort of wiry is for hand quilting and that should never be used in a machine. I'm sure the spool would be marked though..
