Default Have you heard of this kind of strip quilt?

First of all, I have to say that it feels so good to be back. We had computer issues for months, even multiple computers - and I couldn't find my password which was wiped out (and yes, I hadn't written it down ). With the sweet moderator's help, I'm back!

Ok, now to my question - I haven't seen one yet, but a friend keeps tellling me about this strip quilt she makes - you take 4 yards worth of fabric, cut 2.5" strips, throw it all into a bag. Then you begin sewing them end to end as you pull them randomly from the bag. When you get to the end, you double it back and sew one long seam - and again and again until you have the quilt top. She said it goes really fast at that point. And the lengths wind up being staggered, not all the same, so it's not just one row of this fabric and the next of a different fabric (does this make sense?).

I tried a search, but didn't find anything. Does anyone do this? I'd love to see pics and hear of any tips!

It's called a Jelly Roll quilt - except you cut your own strips instead of buying a pre-cut roll.
There are different variations - some put a contrasting square at the end of each strip (in- betwee strips) to break it up a bit, some join the strips on the diagonal (like you do for binding) to get a different look.

search jelly roll race .... I think that's what you are seeking. They're fun and easy to make. I made them with wider strips also.

google jelly roll race quilts - that's what this was designed for, but no reason you can't cut your own strips. You cut 18 inches off the first strip - that's how the colors become staggered throughout the quilt. I'm hoping to do one soon myself. On you tube there is a video showing a woman make one quilt in 35 minutes.

Here's a link to the QB Gallery with some pics of completed quilts of this type ...

As a point of clarification .. you mentioned 4 yards of fabric ...
For this type it's actually a Jelly Roll of 2-1/2" strips (40 pieces).
Or as mentioned above, you can cut your own strips ... one WOF strip per piece of fabric.

    Ok, stupid question:
I realize you can add many and/or wide borders, but what size quilt does this make?

You can make it as wide as you want. When you get to the length you want go back the other way
