Default heat n' bond applique question

    hi!

i made a picnic blanket for a school end gift using heat n' bond. there are some pretty detailed pieces and i just don't have time to sew each individual element.

i was hoping to do an all over quilting pattern. it will be pretty close - maybe an inch apart over the whole top.

how many washes will it withstand before it starts to fray or completely lose bits?

Heat and Bond has never worked very well for me if the edges are not sewn down. It always curls, but that could be just me.

If it were me, I would take the time to sew all your edges down, or just not use it for what you intended. The edges will fray.

If you used Heat and Bond Lite you can sew thru or around the edges and you should as lite does not hold up well. If its regular Heat and Bond , you really can not sew thru it , and it does last longer than the light. Wash on cold and low dryer heat to get more life without dewing the edges.

I have used a lot of heat-in -bond lite for applique but it is meant to be sewn down. I always sew around the edges with a blanket stitch or satin stitch.

Did you use the permanent stiff no-sew heat & bond? If you used the lite the pieces need to be stitched or they will be coming off with the first wash.

I've tried several brands of adhesive paper and haven't found one yet that prevents fraying if it's light enough to sew through and not gum up the needle. A small narrow zigzag stitch would be quick and easy to do. Granted, some detail might be lost from the pieces, but necessary if you don't want fraying. I've tried raw edge appliqué and had it fray at least a bit on the first wash.

I have never found any fusible that the fabric didn't curl up after a few washings.
