Help with a border on a Mariners compass
I have a challenge, I recieved a block for a round robin exchange and the center block is a round marineers compass. There is fabric with it. Would you just applique this circle to a square of the fabric so it could become a square block for the next person that receives this next month? I am stumped. Any suggestions would help. Thanks

I am surprised you were sent a round center, that would have not been allowed in any of the round robins I've been part of (22 in the past 15 years) did she write her wishes, how she wants it to continue? I would check with the project moderator and possibly ( depending on what the moderator recommends) contact the center owner & ask ( the journal that goes with it should state the direction she wants rounds to go--- fabric likes, dislikes, end shape-- square, rectangular, ( round???)every rr I've been in has stated from the beginning the size the starting center should be, and the shape... They've always been either square or rectangular, odd shapes have never been allowed.

That's a strange one, I would expect it to be squared also. I think you idea to applique it to a square is a good one, maybe add a simple pointy border as your contribution. I think the mariner's compass person should have put it on a square.

If time were an issue, I'd do the applique-on-a-square thing for this one, though I might also add something a little extra in the corners of the base square.
If there was time I'd probably find a way to piece the circle into a background that was also pieced, just to challenge myself and/or show off a little bit, heehee.

I was surprised also. We have a small group and I don't think we expected anything like a round block. I think if we have another it will have to be a rule no round blocks, too many folks have trouble sewing on a curve. I searched on pinterest and came up with a solution. I made a pattern I folded the compass block in half two times the took the background fabric and folded it in half two times and layed the compass on the fabric and measured 2" in each side of the compass and then drew a line to make a square block. I then cut out the shape of the compass and measured in 1/2 in and had to pin pin pin the sewed it up so it is now a square block.. I am so sorry I did not take a picture of it. I really don't know what the person had in mind. They included 3 fabrics with the block. I am going to be anxious to find out who put the block in.
