Quote: I am unable to come up with the mathematices for a square in square pattern that comes out to be 4 1/2 inches unfinished.

Also I need to do a flying geese that measures 2 1/2 x 4 1/2.

I do not want to do a paper piece mthod. I like cutting the pieces out.

Any help available out there:)

Thanks
Bebe
For that size Flying Goose you have choices. You can make them 1 at a time using 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangle and then using 2 - 2 1/2" squares at each end of the long rectangle, sewing just a thread or so inside the diagonal line on the small squares.

Or you can use the 4 in one method that has a tutorial/video you can find if you search the web for Flying Geese.

If you don't want any math for the Square in a Square method, buy Jodi Barrows book[s] with templates.
