HELP! how does sharing a pattern work?

Is the copyright ensuring the person gets paid, and that's it? I've always been fascinated with the boutique sales and etsy shops, but haven't participated in any because I am very aware of infringement issues.

This site has many areas on it that explains about the process of obtaining, using, and how to read the fine print in copyrights.
