I just can,t figure out how you can do a whole block with just a 5 inch wide area, course I can go whole length of quilt in 5 inches. help please-also does anyone know of a website that would help or have ideas for the small quilting motifs, I would like to stitch in the ditch on my log cabin quilt but can only reach half of the block, I'm new on my machine. sadly, that is the downside to a 9 inch throat on a frame.

you'll have to do the quilting in 5 inch sections if you are doing motifs or SITD.

they do make pantos that are all over designs that are 5 inches or less - you can use these or do a meandering type design.

I have a Juki and once wanted to do the entire block. What I did was one row of designs in the top 2 corners. Then I did another [probably 5"] design in the center. Then I did another row in the bottom two corners. Turned out well... but thank goodness it was only a twin.

On 10" block, it would look something like this

I have a Juki TL98Q and have no problems with a 5" block...you just have to move the quilt in the direction you need to go. You need to use the needle up/down button so you can rotate your block to SID. Maybe I'm not understanding the problem correctly but I'm not seeing how it could be a problem. Doing motifs is a different story and you have to figure out how to rotate your block so you don't have to have too many thread stops and starts. As always the dreaded words practice, practice, practice will be your best friend in learning how to do whatever you want to create.

My quilt is on a Gracie II frame and it doesn't allow you to turn it around since the quilt is on the poles. Linda

Okay....I understand now....there is lots of up and down, side to side movement that one has to again learn and practice. I have a frame that I put my Juki on and found I did so much better with it off frame no matter what size quilt I was doing....just me...and I'm usually the exception or weird one. So now my frame sits in a closet. Maybe Chrisma (sp) could help you. It wouldn't matter what machine or frame they had even tho it might have a larger throat area the process would still be the same even tho they might have a larger throat space. There are also many other longarm quilters here that could help you too.
Maybe if you posted a new topic calling for help with longarmers they would be able to help you. Sorry I wasn't any help. Wishing you much success!
