I would not have thought of that, Jan. I learn so much from this board.:)

In you case, you've used 2 of the three primary colors (yellow[tan], blue, and red). So, I'd use something in the red family....rust/burgundy/deep orange/true red/etc. for that narrow first border. I think you'll be surprised how it would enliven your quilt.

I like this idea, and would audition various pieces to see what I like.

"Color theory" is the reason this sort of addition works. But we don't have to "know" that to see that it makes a difference.

I've had virtually no art/color training, but spend a lot of time looking at pictures of quilts and dissecting why one works and another "feels" flat. Just keep that red/blue/yellow idea in mind -- and all their extensions, red, pink, rust, burgundy, orange, etc.; navy, agua, teal, etc.; tan, ecru, yellow, gold, mustard, browns, etc. -- in mind and you'll be less likely to go wrong.

(On the other hand, you can also use the magenta, cyan (blue), and yellow color wheel, LOL!)

I love Jan's suggestion too! The burgundy is the perfect addition!
