I agree that you want a pattern that you can use a larger piece of your focus fabric - that print is so nice. Try adding some fabrics that read a bit solid ( like the first purple in the top row). I would lay the print with the purple, a charcoal grey, a black and a lighter grey. Then add in prints one at a time to see what balances it. I like the prints you are showing, but I feel the purple flower and the one at the end and several of the bold prints in the black and white are a bit overpowering for this great print. I would love to see a quilt with just all the fabrics in your black/white row. I think that would be outstanding!

Default Black and Purple

[QUOTE=TeresaA;7622515]I loved the purple/black print in the middle of my photo so I got it. Then I pulled out some of the purples and blacks I had to see if it all would meld into a quilt idea.

There is a black and purple quilt called "Black Opal" I made one and it is stunning. I used all sorts of fabrics. I love the quilt.

I seriously agree with quiltmouse. I can see your fabrics in the design at the link.

This might work with your focus fabric in a border

Thanks again for all the thoughts. They are really helpful!

More Electric quilt play and here's one I thought of.

Just a simple Irish chain with some stars. The background will be mostly the B/W version of the purple focus print. But I only have a yard of the B/W print, just as I only have a yard of its purple sister. Rather than a problem, I always consider the lack of a fabric an OPPORTUNITY to add another design element. So I'm doing a different black and white with the purple focus fabric stars than I do with the "generic" purple stars. Here's what I've got. I don't necessarily have all the purples arranged the way they'll be in the end Of course, I need to sleep on it to decide if it's worthwhile.

Here's a closeup that shows the inverse effect.

I had to show you this rendition, so crazy, I almost feel like doing it. It would be a fun one for future generations to find hidden under a large bunch of other quilts ;-). I'd want web cams so I could see their reaction from heaven (of course, heaven).

It hasn't yet.

Beauthttp://www.quiltingboard.com/pictures-f5/focus-pocus-t59773.htmliful fabrics. Check this one out made by a board member. I have it on my bucket list to make.

I've looked at Google images and Pinterest and nothing grabbed my interest.

Soooo, I was hoping you guys would help my creative processes flow.

What would you do with these purples and blacks if you could do anything?

I have decent piecing skills so it doesn't have to be a simple quilt. I'm not overly fond of "quick quilt" techniques anyway. I'd rather do something a little more complex, and more fun

I would probably add white or grey as a constant background, probably white, since if grey, I'd probably want to match the grey in my main print. The only rule is I can't buy anything. But I have a great stash.

Oh, I also have an almost-all-black black and white that I forgot to add. And I have a bunch more purples.

In real life, the purples are a bit more toward violet than they are here.

Oh, I only have a yard of the main black-purple, so it can't be anything that over-uses it. I'm very much a (planned) scrappy quilter.

So, what do you think?

More playing. And I think I've decided on the quilt I want to make. But it may mean I'll have to buy fabrics. We'll see if I have enough purple and grey for the background. This quilt has enough going on that I don't want the background to bee too scrappy.

I've learned that I can't make a purple and black quilt. It looks too much like a bruise.

So, I'm making an aurora borealis quilt! Green and grey and purple all over! The darks will be both very dark blue, blackish and black purple. I think I have 2 good bright greens. And the stars will be the only things that change fabrics, varying shades of purple including my purple/black fabric. I have several purples that will work.

My own design ;-).
