Hello all! I am a new quilter and I just purchased my new Janome 7700 and am scared to play with it...lol! It's my first fancy machine and I don't want to mess anything up. I have read and re-read the book that came with it but I just don't get it. Can someone who has this machine please explain to me about the APC function...well..I know what it is for but am confused on how to disengage it from the straight stitch hole to where I can do zig zag and decorative stitching. I am scared I will break the plate or a needle or something. And...what does D1S, D2S and D3S mean??? The manual was not very helpful in explaining. Thanks for any help you can provide. Congrats! You're going to love this machine. You just have to select another stitch like the zigzag stitch and it will disengage the APC. I often use the quilting stitch - 93. I think page 34 & 35 will explain the D1S, but the D1S is just a straight stitch. The D2S & D3S are locking stitches... that's on page 30 in the manual.

Madamepurl is so right - love it. I also use stitch 93 with most of my quilting, but move to DS1 when I am using the "walking foot".

There is a great Yahoo Janome group dedicated to this machine and the 8900 - JanomeHorizon7700_8900 (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JanomeHorizon7700_8900/)- which has been a wonderful place to ask questions and learn about this machine.

I've had mine for about 18 months and it's been a lot of fun. Have a great time!!

I have the 7700 -- and a great way to get acquainted with your machine is doing a stitch sampler (some folks call it a stitch bible). Take a pieces of plain fabric with stabilizer behind (cut a bunch of a standard size that you can handle) it and contrasting thread (I use unbleached muslin and red thread) and stitch out the different stitches using different widths and lengths for the fancy ones, label the stitches so you know what the settings are. This will give you a reference for how the stitches look and what adjustments work and which ones don't. I repeat this process with stitches that I think will look nice when I quilt, but I make a quilt sandwich and again make notes. This way I can easily see what works for quilting (or sewing on binding) and what doesn't.

I have made one of these for all of my machines going back over 30 years -- it's a real help.

/rhealene- can you remember using and learning a computer being nervous and afraid to touch in case it broke. Look at any child they have no trouble causing havoc on the same machine. I'm sure you will not break anything and if you are going to alter something make a note of where it is before you play. After watching I have no trouble and love playing. It is a lovely machine enjoy.

Ahhh....makes a whole lot more sense to me now...thank you all so much for the "enlightenment" . I've been reading this forum for many, many months and because of what has been said about the 7700, I knew that was the one I wanted! And...I am learning so much about quilting from you wonderful ladies...you are all awesome!! Thanks also for the yahoo group info...I joined there too. Hopefully soon I can show some pics of my quilts. No more fear...I'm off to play with my new machine...you all have a great day!
