I like it the way it is - I feel like I am looking into a endless landscape of hills.
If you want to add a tree, etc., I would cut them out of construction paper first and pin on to see if you really like the addition. To me it would be easier and faster than cutting the tree, etc., out of cloth. You could also change the size or shape more easily until you get what you want and then you will have your pattern.

Are you thinking appliqué? My thought was possibly thread painting in some trees in the distance (tiny) and getting larger as you approach the foreground. Possibly done in dark green or black?
