At three years of age, I would think girlie colors and some "cute", koalas, kangaroos, a flower. The colors will appeal to her, and mom can tell "back home" stories about the critters.

I totally agree with that. You can do a modified girly-Aussie or Aussie-girly but it would be sooooo special to get that from her gran.

Somthing that represents her Heritage...I vote Aussie...then it becames a keeper and not just another quilt.

How about a combination of a girlish colors with downunder theme units (animals, natural wonders, etc.)?
