She could check out some of the tutorials from Missouri Star Quilting Company. Perhaps she would like to make large pinwheels. I just made up a quick little throw with them. I've attached a photo so you can see. Here is the tutorial on how to make they really easy. They use charm squares but you can do it with larger squaes - you'll just get bigger pinwheels. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekYpJzHoW6E

Cut the squares in quarters and with the 5" squares do a Falling Charm quilt???

I like that kaleidescope technique. Very clever. I do think that the blocks with so many bias pieces would be a bit tough on a beginner, but it's one I'd like to try.
