If I cut the boarder 4 and 1/2 inches and in the corners I want to add half square triangles of some of the varity used in quilt and boarders. There will be 8 pcs to make the sqs for corners blocks. What size do I cut the squares to put with another color and sew down twice in the middle and cut to be 1/4 of the square. thanks for the help.

Here is a how to I found. I would use 4 and 7/8ths inch squares. Or 5 inch square to trim to the correct size. Both are explained here. Luann

Thanks for answer , however I wand 4 hst in each corner block. and I nee to end up with 4 and 1/2 square

I'm not a math wiz at all. When I have a problem like this.....I use scrap fabric and cut and sew squares until I get the correct size. It usually is only 2 or 3 trys till I get what I want.

If you have problems with the math try this: measure the two sides of your borders (I think you said 4 and a half inches) and draw on a square on a piece of paper using those measurements. Cut the square into half square triangles. Now lay one of the triangles on a new piece of paper and mark all three sides. Measure a quarter of an inch seam allowance on each side and mark the lines. You now have the size of your half square triangles for your corner pieces. Make a sample just to make sure they fit correctly.

If your finished border is 4" (4 1/2" unfinished) then your corner block needs to also be finished at 4." If you want to have 2 HSTs in each direction then they would be 2" finished (or 2 1/2" unfinished) for a total of 4 HSTs. This means that your starting square would need to be 2 7/8" (if you sew perfectly) or 3" (if you want to trim down).

I think you are saying you want to make a cornerstone that is made up of 4 half square triangles.

If you cut the border strips at 4 1/2 inches that means that after the seam allowances, your border is 4 inches finished.

That means your 4 half square triangles must finish to 2 inches each. No matter what the finished size is of the half square triangle, you need to add 7/8 of an inch to the finished size. I usually just add one inch to give me a little wiggle room. So cut your squares at 3 inches. I make the half square triangles and then trim them down to the correct size square. For you this is 2 1/2 inches.

Remember, each set of two squares will make two half square triangles.
