I've cleaned my machine, rethreaded it and done what little I know to do and am still getting thread nests on the bobbin side of the sewing. What is causing this? I have an inexpensive Brother machine.

I recently was getting some nests and I cleaned my machine, oiled and changed out my needle. Nothing worked until I checked the thread path of my big cone thread. I eliminated one of the thread guides and it gave a more direct route for the thread to the needle and the thread nests were gone. Check also that you don't have lint in the tension discs.

My machine does that when the bobbin is not seated properly or if the bobbin is placed in the case backwards.

Ditto..Daisydawg...I think the thread has missed a tension at top or jumped out of take-up lever. I vote for tension disk. Do a cleaning with unwaxed floss...maybe a bit of fluff or thread bit is keeping thread from seating between disks.

Usually when there's a mess on the bottom it has to do with some tension problem on top. If cleaning, re-threading and making sure the tension dial is set at "normal", doesn't work, it could be under the needle plate. Unscrew the screws and take a look at your plastic bobbin case. Is is scarred up? Is it sitting in it's proper position? Is the area under the needle plate packed with lint? Is there a broken pin under the bobbin case? Is the hook damaged? If it has a plastic hook, throw it away and buy another machine.

The 301 did that to me recently. I was surprised since it's not a usual occurence with that machine. I tinkered a bit and it didn't get much better so I went back to basics. Unthreaded it, took the bobbin casing out, cleaned the bobbin area, put in a new needle, rethreaded, put the bobbin back in the casing and started again. Still not right. So took out the bobbin casing once more and got my flashlight. I cleaned once again and found some bits of lint in the bobbin casing area. Cleaned them out, put a drop of oil there and put it back together. Sews like a top again. It doesn't take much lint in the the right place to throw things off.
