I'm working on my first ever quilt. Trying to do some free motion but my fabrics don't seem to move freely. Feed dogs are down, have quilting foot on, but it seems to be jerky movements.

What am I doing wrong? Do I need to put something under the backing? I've beens sewing for over 50 years and this is my first attempt at a quilt. I love all the quilts you ladies, and gentlemen, make. You've all inspired me, just need some help on how to make the fabric move more smoothly.

I hope I explained it so you can understand my problem! I'm so new at this quilting stuff.

Thank you!
Diana

Are you using gloves? I find the material is so much easier to move with them.

Are you using quilting gloves? That seems to help me the most.

Thank you so much.

Great minds think alike (and at the same time)!

I'd make sure you have Machingers gloves on - they make a HUGE difference!

I like Machingers the best, but I used Fons & Porters for years and they okay, too.

I found that too, sometimes the sandwich seemed to get "stuck". Finally figured out that there is the tiniest lip between the bed of the machine and the throat plate...it was never a problem for normal sewing or piecing, but when FMQ it's just enough for the seams in the backing to get caught on. I put a piece of clear packing tape over the throat plate and down over the front of the machine bed, and ... no more problem.

Thank you! I've been looking at all the beautiful things eveyone makes and decided to try it. Trust me, nothing like all of you make, just a small Christmas wallhanging.

Can I find the gloves at Hancocks or JoAnn's?
