My phone and internet were down yesterday so I didn't get to post these pictures of how I finished my small, 1/2" hexie quilt. I hope that doing a full size quilt will be as easy as this small one. I trimmed the backing and batting to the same irregular shape as the top. I simply sewed small hexies into a "frame" for the back of the quilt and whip stitched it wrong sides together (last picture). I then slip stitched the "frame" hexies to the backing fabric. I hope the pictures help where my explanation is confusing

Thanks for the photos Kathyd. I think I got it!!! I may try that method with my quilt. Binding is still in the thinking stage!! But I do need to decide on something soon. Love your little quilt. I have only made such small hexies to put in the appliqued borders. My quilts are all one inch hexies. Yours is just adorable.

I saw that quilt edge as well and thought it was a neat way to finish a hexi quilt no matter what the size. Thanks for sharing all the pictures.

I made two little doll quilts with hexies from a Miniature Quilts magazine. Am starting one with way bigger hexies from Australian Patchwork and Quilting.

I do hexies the same way as Petalpatsy by hand. It's the way my mother taught me and it works great
It is portable also-just stitch from dot to dot & rotate the pieces to keep going.

Mary B, thanks so much for starting this thread. I'm a hexie newbie, so here is my "work" so far, lol. They aren't even sewn together yet.

I had bought a Fiskars hexie punch (1" per side) and punched out a bunch from magazine cards but hadn't done anything more. After seeing this thread the other day I decided to try sewing just one before bed and ended up with the 7 shown. :-) I'm going to do flowers in darker, muted colors and keep the gold center constant for all of them. Not sure yet what to use for a background color, but I can see this is going to be fun!

Can you help me with a few questions? When talking about the size of the hexie, are you referring to the side measurement? Is single strand regular piecing thread (such as 50 wt Mettler) commonly used to attach the hexies? Is it OK if the folded fabric on the back is more than 1/4"? I found it easier to baste the gold hexie with a little more fabric than the burgandy ones. Finally, if I don't baste through the paper, is it OK if I leave the basting thread in? I know there are many methods (and I don't worry about quilt police), but am curious if I'm getting the hang of it. Thanks!!

sewplease Oh this is going to be so pretty! And yes, the size is determined by the length of the sides not the diameter of the hexie.

As for thread you can use any kind-especially one that closely matches your fabric. I've used a cream colored hand quilting cotton thread that I really like. It's very strong and when I go to secure my thread ends at the beginning and ending of each side it knots tightly. Synthetic threads (polyester, rayon etc) like to slip and slide and not knot as well for me. I've seen many hexies sewn with a whipstitch. That's how I started out, but I had a hard time making these "invisible" from the right side so switched to using a ladder stitch. Google "ladder stitch" and you will find many places that will show you how.

I've left the basting stitches in. I've seen some basting that shows on the front; I would think those need to be taken out. I'm a "path of least resistance" person so if they don't show, why leave them in? I figure they add more stability to the patch.

The beauty of EPP is the accuracy comes from the seam (sewing) line not the cutting line--so yes the 1/4" seam allowance is only a guideline. Once in a while on my little hexies the seam allowance is a little less than a quarter, but not a big deal to me as this is going to be used a doll quilt and not get the heavy duty wear a regular quilt would get.

I just found out I report for jury duty next week and my bag of hexies are going with while I wait!!!
