This is very sound advice, it's what I would tell you also. I find that the two features that I can't live without any more,(I'm spoiled now) are the ability to drop my feed dogs a,d the thread cutter. But there are many inexpensive machines out there, and if your just learning they will do for the time being. You can always trade up, or buy a used higher end model, they are out there you just have to look. My friend got a Janome 6500 for 375 dollars, and it was barely used, they wanted to trade it in for the newer machine. She loves it.

I picked up a Brother Project Runway model PC-420 for $375.00 at All Brands because it was being replaced with a newer model. The feed dogs drop, all of the quilting feet are there. Auto threader, auto thread cutter. Nice machine -I love it. Have pieced a few quilts on it and quilted two so far. Love this machine.

Hi from Hammond, LA! I'm new to this so I can't give you any suggestions...hubby and I just bought two Brother XL3750's from walmart.com. They come with a 'quilting bonus' so I thought they would be pretty cool to start with. We love them! They are about $140.00. Good luck in your search :o)

Hi! I'm new online (from AZ) though I've been "eavesdropping" for about 6 months. Thanks so much for all the tips and suggestions, do's and don'ts, and the great encouragement you give to each other. I've been quilting for almost two years, an am loving every moment I get to sew. Sure have enjoyed following your chats!

Welcome from Oregon city, Oregon. Brothers is a good machine and some very reasonalbly priced. Janome is also good (made by brothers). Both my Brothers and Janome have a speed control on them which is great for learning and also for governing the speed for an intricate procedure.

Hi and I am from Jefferson, Louisiana. Go to the dealers and try out sewing machines, you will probably like one over the other one. Sometimes the dealer makes all the difference in buying a machine.

Hi, I am from Covington. My suggestion is to test drive some machines at different dealers before you make a descision. Go back after you have time to think about what you like and don't like.
