Welcome from Michigan! One thing for sure you want one with as big of a throat area as you can get. Makes it so much easier to quilt.

Welcome from Iowa, Louisiana. You can quilt with your straight stich if you can get an even feed foot for it and just quilt in the ditch. I have done several like this. If you want to free motion quilt you need to get one that the feed dogs will drop down. Have fun, this quilting stuff is addicting.

Welcome from Long Island! You can always go to Joanns and see what they have. Some machines on sale.So you don't have to spend alot of money. And they have alot of extra stitches built in.

I have the ultimate straight stitch... a vintage featherweight. I have been told that I can cover the feed dogs with masking tape and quilt away. My old machine sews so well, I do not want a new machine!

Welcome from Ohio. I love my Bernina 230; it's a great machine.
