Hobbs batting versus Warm N Natural
#11
I've used both, with success. For me, the Warm & Natural is more accessible and sometimes cheaper, if I get it at JoAnn's with a coupon. I usually try to get Hobb's at quilt shows, if there's a special of some sort.

I prefer Hobbs 80/20 as I fmg on my domestic machine all my large quilts. It is much easier to stuff/roll under the throat. I do use W&N for my wall hangings. I order Hobbs from Connecting Threads when it is on sale. Get the W&N from JoAnn's when it is on sale.

I use both W&N and Hobbs 80-20, and it depends on what I am doing which I use. I haven't noticed the W&N getting thinner, but then I tend to buy in bulk and it takes a while to whittle it down so I haven't bought any recently. I find the Hobbs does not shrink and wrinkle and I like that look in my quilt. I usually try to do a bit of pre-shrinking with the W&N -- I wet it and throw it into a hot dryer with a couple of towels. I use the W&N for all my table runners since I may put hot things on them.

I prefer using Hobbs 80/20. I bought a roll from JAF 5 years ago. Don't buy it in a bag because then you have to lightly mist it with water and place it in a dryer with a setting of air dry. Otherwise, it will look like an old theatre curtain. Back in the old days, W&N actually had tiny splinters of wood and other crude in it. But it does have a flatter look if you are making a quilt you want that antique look. I do NOT know why it appears that JAF discontinued Hobbs batting by the roll. It was actually fold into fourths so the roll is only about 24" in height.

Hobbs 80/20 is the only batting we sell at the shop where I work. I buy it because it's convenient (only 3 miles...I'm an hour away from a large city), and I really like how quilts drape when I use it. Plus, I get an employee discount.

I like Hobbs 80/20. W&N seems sturdier but I think the Hobbs has a little more lift to it. BTW out of the package it doesn't seem like it, I always throw mine in the dryer to fluff up and get the wrinkles out. I also like Quilters Dream, but I think the best thing to do is to buy the smallest size you can of several different battings and then do some small things to sample them.

I've never used Hobbs 80/20. I have used W&N and was happy w/ it - although, the quilt gets heavy. My go-to cotton batting is Quilters Dream Cotton Request. It's lightweight. I don't want a lot of fluff.
