A true shadow box quilt will not have the "shadow" fabric going the full length and width of the focus fabric. The shadow fabric needs to have a square of background fabric sewn on the end to give the 3d effect. I can't tell by the photos but if you sew the black strips you have to the opposite side of each block will they be squares or still rectangles. If they become squares, then I suspect the pattern the original piecer had in mind was this one that barnbum made a while back:

She said she got the original pattern out of Quilt Magazine back in 2011

I'm working on my second Illusion quilt. The Illusion has a white square on the bottom of the black. Then a black strip with a white square would be sewn across the top. The blocks are then put together with white sashing. This gives the illusion.

I made an Illusion quilt and these definitely resemble some of the parts.

Get some ideas from www.accuquilt.com and check out their designs. Then create your own design. Can start with a DNP (disppearing nine patch) and work from there. Enjoy and be glad! God bless you.
Use your creativity.

My initial thought was the same as Feline Fanatic. It looks like a brick pattern.
