Default How to cut wool mat?

My 1/2 inch thick wool mat arrived today. (30 x 30). It's actually a saddle/horse protector.

I want to cut it down. what can I use to do that?

I would more than likely use one of those "utility" knives. The utility knife has a handle so it would be safer and easier than lets say a single edge razor blade.

I wonder if Office Depot or any of those print places would do it for you. They have those big machines that cut big reams of paper, business cards, invitations, etc.

I'd use a carpet knife and a metal yardstick.....please be careful.

I would clamp the metal ruler or straight edge to the mat so the utility knife will cut down in the same place each time. You could start it with a sharp rotary cutter but it will only cut down to about 1/4 inch I think.

I didn't know any better, so I cut mine with my 60mm rotary cutter and a slide lock ruler. It had a new blade, and went through in 2 easy passes. My wool mat was also 1/2" thick

I drew lines on mine with a marker, then held it so that one line was parallel to the edge of my desk, but protruding over in to the open space. Then I used a long sharp knife to saw up and down along the line. Worked really easily to cut it. I cut mine in to 4 - 15 x 15 pieces.

My first thought was don't cut it. My mat is the 18 x 24 and quite often I wish it were bigger.

I just cut mine with a 60 mm rotary cutter. It went a lot better after I put a new blade in the cutter!

I marked it with a felt tip pen and used a metal yardstick to cut against.

Thank you for the suggestions!

I also made a "pillowcase" for it out of muslin. It does smell a little "different" when used - but then so do cutting mats.

Bear, one of my cats uses mine to sleep on when I'm not using it lol.
She loves it! My other cat hasn't noticed it or doesn't care for it.
