I have a large sheet of plexiglass from the hardware store, with masking tape around the edges to form a border. I lay it over the quilt and draw my design with dry erase markers. Once I find something I like, I take photos with my iPhone, and try some more. When I finally decide, I set the plexiglass against the wall to reference, and start quilting.
I like this method, because I'm practicing the design in the correct size, it doesn't waste paper, and I can go over the design several times to develop muscle memory. When I'm especially focused, I can also determine my quilting path as one continuous line throughout the block, from block to block and sometimes the entire quilt. (That's a bonus, in my book! )

This is the background fill that I am using on my current quilt. After drawing it out with a pencil and paper, I got the hang of it. It's looking really good!

jen love that background thanks ....i tend to decide what is more important ....on a t shirt quilt i go around ''stuff'' so that it pops ...i did 2 quilts for family of peeps that passed away ...those i tend to want it melded together ...kinda bigger picture ...so i meander over the whole thing ...so decide what you want the quilt to say ...let them speak to you
