I either surge or zig zag the edge. Works well.

I don't have a serger, and was told at guild to not pink anything in quilting. (No reason given; just don't pink edges.) So, I sew along the edge in about 1/8" and that keeps it from raveling.

In this case, pinking the edges of yardage is simply to prevent raveling. These pinked edges would be cut off when you start squaring the fabric edge to cut shapes. It's true you don't want to pink your quilting strips, but that is different from pinking yardage for prewashing. The reason you do not want to pink edges for quilting is because it greatly reduces the accuracy of your cuts and piecing. (Some manufacturers pink the edges of their pre-cut strips and squares; quilters work around this, but usually don't like it.)

Since I prewash fabric 99% of the time, I've found that by cutting off a triangle on all 4 corners of the fabric that raveling is minimal, but if I forget I will have an occasional problem. Of course, if you don't wish to prewash, it should not be a problem.

I zigzag the cut edges or pink them with a rotary cutter.

My Bernina will zig zag the edges quite nicely using a long, wide zig zag. However my Viking just makes a mess of it.

I tried clipping the four corners and found I still had some raveling. I started zig-zagging the raw edges and now have virtually NO raveling or threads to deal with. To me, it's well worth the extra 5-10 minutes I spend on doing this.

I also have the same question. My fabric frays while I am piecing.
