I’ve been quilting for 43 years. I have Never preshrunk a batting. I’ve never understood anyone feeling the need. I purchase many different batting’s, if I don’t want one to shrink in the finished quilt I use one that doesn’t shrink. There are many factors that play into the finished quilt- the fabrics, the threads, the batting and the amount of quilting on the quilt all play into it.

I did pre-shrink my batting one time and it just made a big mess in my washer and dryer. I was a beginner and was told I need to pre-shrink my batting. Never again!! I do wash all of my fabrics before I start a project tho'.

I washed warm & natural cotton batting in hot water, regular type top loading machine with the big agitator, let it agitate and spin out, put in the dryer on high, and it was fine. of lint in the dryer lint screen though, so I cringe to think about how much lint went into my washing machine drain. I'll have to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get plugged up.

Here is a good blog entry entry where the author describes how she pre-shrinks both batting (including wool) and fabric (including kits and pre-cuts). (Summary of it - soak batting in hot water in the washer, then drain and run the spin cycle and dry in the dryer; use a zippered lingerie bag to protect smaller pieces of fabric in the washer and dryer.)
