How do you "set" hand painted fabric?

How do you "set" hand painted fabric?
I have a tablecloth that I want to turn into a quilt. Thrift shop find for $10 and beautiful. It's hand painted, on cotton and you can feel the layers of paint.
I am terrifed to ruin this fabric!
Help please!

Thanks ladies! No, I don't think its been washed at all and I have no idea what type of paint it is.
