I tell my recipients that quilts are made to be used, not stuck in a closet because they're "too good to use." Couch quilts come closest, except for the baby quilts. Those got dragged around the house, made into tents, clutched in a toddler's hand while he slept on the dog, etc.

All most all of the quilts I make are for Linus or for cancer patients at the VA hospital, so once gone I don't worry about them, just hope they are used, but not too harshly.

No art quilts from me. I make mostly quilts that are to be used. From time to time I will find that one is not being used but displayed and I will gently chide the owner that I make quilts for snuggling, dragging and the warmth of a good snooze on a cold evening. Often after the owner knows I wish the quilt to be used, it come off display and is used. It that makes me happy.

I, like you, see my quilts in categories. Show quilts, bed quilts and utility quilts. Most of my quilts are bed quilts or utility quilts. I have only made one that I would consider a show quilt.

My quilts are mainly given to my family and my biggest fan is my grandson. When he was about 2 I made him a quilt he took everywhere. If they traveled, it was packed to go. He is 17 and while he doesn’t use that quilt now he still has it. He prefers quiltsI that are hand quilted because they are so soft and he still takes one along when he goes away. Some are threadbare now. He loves them and that makes me happy.

I prefer the quilt to be used in whatever fashion the recipent wants....................just don't fold it up and put it in the closet never to be used. I tell them that its been walked on, used the the kitties in the making of the quilt so don't worry about whether you might damage it. It was made to be used. When you think about all the work, worries, etc you put into it you want it to be used till its thread barren................then you know all those hours have been worth it. Just my take on it.

I don’t do show quilts. Mine are definitely made to be used. My BFF was afraid to show me hers because the binding was getting quite ragged. I told her that was what I liked to see. I knew she used it. I could always make another. Well, she already has a few others I have made for her. That particular one was her favorite.

I really like to honor the history of quilts.....so I just love it when a quilt is used to keep warm and more and more, I am loving making the scrappy ones. Once I give a quilt to someone...it is theirs....what happens to it stays in their home. I do wash and dry my quilt before giving them away and let their new owners know that I have done so and it is perfectly fine to wash them. I made a quilt for my sister who promptly put it in the closet stating it is too good to use on the bed...since then, she and her husband have worn out several of my scrappy turning twenty quilts....and the requests I get for new ones are usually for "flannel" and big enough for two people to be totally covered on a queen sized bed. My other brother at first did not like any quilt with bright or flowery fabrics in it....now his requests are for any quilt big enough to be on their bed....he recently told me....even your gaudy quilts are good quilts.....tee hee. I have made some decorative quilts with applique but those are little ones and I mean little....I do use them on the wall and have a few spaces where I change them for the seasons. I also have made a few judy nieymier quilts....but that was for the class experience mostly.

Used, worn out, then tossed. I can't stand the thought of one of my quilts to be too good to be used. The only exception is a friend who makes up her bed everyday. I know she enjoys my quilt, everyday on her bed. Sometimes, looking at it is enough.

I make all of the types of quilts. Sometimes I find a pattern I like that looks like fun to make and I use scrap fabric to make it. Examples- spool of thread quilt where I used pretty fabric for the spools. It now sits on my recliner that is thread bare. I made an applique Baltimore album quilt that hangs on the wall. I have specialty Christmas quilts (table runners, tree skirt etc.) that only come out during the holiday. I have a smaller wall hanging quilt with themed special fabric I bought at a quilt store in West Yellowstone. I made a duvet cover for a comforter that goes on a bed. I have made several bed quilts. Mostly I make the quilt, and then decide what to do with it.
