I agree with putting a backing on the quilted part before adding the pillow back. Washing is the key, you don't want the batting to self destruct in the wash.

I decided that it would probably be best to make these into envelope pillow covers as opposed to regular pillow cases - and this will be for extra pillows on the bed (sort of like accent pillows, just a little bigger). I was thinking that the blocks/seams/light quilting might feel kind of nobby under one's head. Also, I just couldn't picture quilted front on regular type pillow cases.

I think I will buy coordinating fabric for some regular pillow cases. I found a tutorial on twiddletails that I want to try. http://www.twiddletails.com/patterns/PCTute.pdf
