I think this means that when we look at a tote of fabric on the shelf and estimate there are about 15 meters there, are underestimating by a large degree just how much is in out stash.

O M G. I think I have a ridiculous amount of yardage on hand here.

Haha! The next time my 'Fabric Mule' (aka DH) complains about how much yardage I have ordered and had shipped to his hotel, I can tell him "It's only another 5 lbs. Honey!"

I just added another 6 yards of Fabric Traditions to the box - and the flaps still cover the top easily. But that's about it.

A couple of years ago the floor in my sewing/craft room collapsed - partly due to the weight of my fabric and old age and poor construction. So, I had to rush to WalMart and buy huge plastic totes - 28x16x12 - with a plain snap-on lid. I started loading each shelf in my big fabric closet into a tote. It was way too heavy for me to lift - so had my DH to start moving them out so that the carpenters could start working on the floor. He just about could not lift the tote and when he did the lid popped off. So, had to take back the huge plastic totes and get smaller ones - this time with locking lids on them. I did keep a few of the larger totes and put yarn in them as yarn isn't very heavy.

Thanks, Bearisgrey! I think....

A while ago, I was trying to figure out an approximate yardage in my stash; taking out a lot more than I wanted to and measuring, then refolding and putting away again wasn't appealing. Given that it was only for my own idle curiousity, I wasn't willing to invest the time.

Now I don't have to! Yippee!! So if I have the majorty of my stash in 12 x12 x 12 cubbies, I can estmate how much I have. As it's just for my information, a guesstimate i good enough. Oh my!
