How Much Quilting is Enough

I generally buy batting which says it can be stitched 10 inches apart. I have a couple quilts that I stitched at 10 inches apart and they've been washed MANY times and are in fine shape (except for the cat hair!). I don't like heavy quilting especially when I'm the one doing the quilting.
