How much thread
This may be a really stupid question. How much thread does it take to quilt a king size quilt. I am just now starting out and am wanting to purchase different colors but not really sure how much to get to finish a quilt, I would hate to start out and not have enough. The spools I am looking at have 5000m on them. Any help would be appreaciated please.

Verna, This would depend on how much quilting you plan on doing to the quilt. You see if you plan on doing lots of detailed quilting, it would run into much more thread than just stitching in the ditch. I usually buy two or three large spools of each neutral color and have them on hand. That way I have extra if I need it. White, black, grey beige and light blue seem to be the ones I use the most.

Even with very heavy quilting on a King size one 5000 meter cone will go a LOOOONNNNNNG ways! I quilt on a LA and mostly only use 5000 meter cones and I have yet to use one full 5000 meter cone on one quilt and that is even when I used to wind my own bobbins from that same cone. Now I use prewounds. But unless you are planning on doing some very detailed quilting like is seen in show quilts I think one 5000 meter cone should be ample for both your top stitching and your bobbin.

I've done a king size using as little as 5 bobbins for my Handiquilter, and I've done others that I've used 11 bobbins. I've gotten pretty good with estimating what I'll need, and wind a bunch before I start quilting.
When I first started with the Bailey, I bought a bunch of spools of cotton thread from Connecting Threads - 1200 yards, and I'd often use more than one to finish the quilt, top and bottom thread. Don't think I ever used up two though. The Bailey loved the stuff, so I bought a large selection, 2 spools of each color. Then moved to the HQ and it hates that thread.
