I just got a new appliqué book which is really nice, but one of the methods they suggest doing is machine appliqué using invible thread. It says to do a blind hemming stitch ( if your machine has that setting). My question is this, is my machine able to do a blind hemming stitch? And what kind of thread would be best with this method?

It should be Stitch number 7. I have a 430 and my book shows that stitch being the same for both the 430 and the 440. I haven't done much applique and haven't used this stitch for that purpose. I usually use a blanket stitch. On the 440 I think those are numbers 45 and 46.

I normally use Aurofil no matter what the job it; piecing, applique, machine or hand stitch and sewing. I would use a cotton thread to either match your applique or a shade darker if you can't get it to match. I've done it where the edges are turned over and also raw edge. Your machine probably does have that stitch but you can use the satin stitch or even a small zig zag stitch will work. Try it on a few test pieces first to get the stitch length right first and then write it down so you'll remember it when you go back. I hope this helps. I don't have a Bernina but even some om the most basic machines have that stitch but I prefer the two that I listed. Do a comparison to see what finish you like the best.

Yes- I have a 440 and the stitch is 45 and 46.

I think the purpose of the blind hem stitch and invisible thread is to make it look more like it's hand stitched. As others have suggested, try it on some practice pieces and see what you prefer. You could also try the zig zag and blanket stitch as well as using cotton or invisible thread for comparison. Then it's up to you, whatever you like best.
