I love the dragonflies, and I also think it would look great with the blocks alternating with a different block, to break it up, and add depth and dimension...
Here is an idea I found that is pretty, maybe a take on it if you decide to do another pattern and not a blank square to alternate; it is from emsewandsew.blogspot.com: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pgGd8vKz5Q...ragonflies.jpg

More important, I just don't think she will like it!
Honest opinions please... should I try to find rose/brown fabric and alternate blocks or put it together like this. I will definately call him to come see it before I do any more than 3 rows...
It just isn't setting right with me, but then again I have been working on this since July so maybe I am just burned out
UPDATE - Here is the look I am going with. I am so much happier with this and I think the gal who will receive it will like it too. Don't know if her hubby will or not, but oh well... can't please everybody and since he is gifting it to her, I think it more important to please her.

I think doing alternate blocks with a matching print would be good. Just saw your new layout. Looks Great!

I think this would look fabulous as an irish chain, with the dragonflies in the "open" areas between the chains.

Or what you have :) I just saw your updated photo - it is lovely.
