Correct....saves fabric...I use to do top/bottom then once I didn't have enough left for the sides so I switched but I don't think it's a rule...I got with the Theory "No rules" "if I like it" that's the rule...

are there rules about this? Oh No! I'm not sure that I need more rules. I'm having enough of a hard time just finding time to quilt.

I did the top and bottom on first, I did not know that there was a rule against that. It came out fine and made doing the sides easier since they were shorter.

i've never heard of such a rule- and have seen many quilts with top/bottom on first-
the only reason for doing it the other way is because of the length needed for the sides being longer when the top/bottom is added first- if you have the fabric to make it work- it's not a big deal at all....no sinning involved

I think there is no rule! Next time, to avoid any anxiety, miter the corners.

I am making an oversized quilt for a king size bed. The quilt is wider than it is long so I will be sewing on the top and bottom borders first. In your case, I would not rip off those borders.

I always put top and bottom on first but I was also told by more than one person that it makes not difference (and one was "quilt" school.

I read somewhere to draw 2 rectangles, then add 'borders' both ways and decide which way you like better. (This relieves the quilt police of lots of work.)

This is the way that I was taught also. Also it is hard to really see how the borders are put on unless you look very closely. No quilt police here!!!!!
