This is what I might do with the quilt. The rows with the horizontal stripes only, I would substitute the hummingbird fabric with a different floral or a solid close to matching the dark fabric in the hummingbird background. This should give you enough hummingbird fabric for more rows of length.

I would try to get the top and bottom rows to match - but that's a personal quirk of mine.

And the side rows, too.

Keepsake Quilting advertises that they will match your fabric if it's still made if you send them a swatch.

what is the width of the quilt as it stands now and what do you shoot for?
I just added black on the top and the bottom. Let me go check. It's 47 in across and 36 in long. I just want it longer than it is wide.
imho - i think you're on the right track here. the black would nicely separate the main body of the quilt from anything else that you add to the top and the bottom and make the whole thing look planned. now, you could add strips of the other colors and use black as the border around everything. that would make the first black inner border seem to belong there. do you ANY of the birds left? if you do, applique birds only, one in each corner. if you don't, applique leaves in each corner. it will tie everything together. if you don't have the real leaves, find similar leaves and use those. or similar flowers. it will all bring it together.

Depends on how much it bothers you. If it were me, I'd add borders and call it a day. And use it as a lesson to better plan a quilt when you have limited fabric. But taking off some rows and adding to the bottom seems like a good alternate solution if it really bothers you.

It is a very pretty quilt. Would it still be big enough if you took the last 2 rows width wise off and put them on the top or bottom? To me it looks like it would work that way and still be big enough for a lap quilt. Just a suggestion. Jan

Lap quilts should be longer one way than another unless you are as tall as you are wide. I would use the other fabric for borders and if you have any small bits left do 4 cornerstones of the hummingbird fabric. Good luck. Di

LMAO!! Funny!

But she is right. I have been in tears over quilts before and it was all wasted energy because the reciever is always happy and thrilled that you MADE something for them. Most people recognize that a lot of effort went into it and will forgive any little errors. Actually, most people will never notice them.
