I do alot of dresden plates, I use wonder under on the point and it holds them in place beautiful for hand or machine stitching, I use invisible thread on the upper if I machine stitch. Sample for you to look at.

I just watched a free video on Eleanor Burns website, www.quiltinaday.com and they did a dresden plate - they sewed the entire plate onto a piece of background fabric, turned it inside out, pressed, adjusted, and then appliqued to the square. Nifty.

I learned this technique by doing all the dishes by hand, but the big difference was made by the 1 / 4 "seam and starch. You can see my photos in this link http://detodounpococonmismanos.blogs...ompania-5.html
I hope You can keep it and stay as you want!

Like others have said, accuracy is the key. Accurate cutting and piecing make the difference. I don't use glue or starch but I do pin to the background carefully. Once stitched, I cut away the background usually to reduce the bulk.
Have made several quilts using blocks hand-pieced (not very well) by a 90 year old lady. Had to redo some of the seams to make the blocks lay flat.
Another tip is to make sure your ironing board is not padded too much. You need FLAT in order to press your block flat. I use a board covered with foil, a piece of warm and natural and covered with muslin.
