I bought some on Ebay. Since it is hard for me to get out, I buy a lot on line. Try Hancock Fabrick, JoAnn's too.

I like Gutermann thread and buy it online from Charles Zarit. http://www.charleszarit.com/index.htm

They sell all of the colors in 1,100 yard spools for $2.50. Joanns regular price for a 500 yard spool is over $5.00.

Mettler Silk Finish 100% cotton thread...machine or hand quilting...doesn't make near the lint that Connecting Threads thread does...but I'm just sayin'.

Try www.superior.com. They sell cotton, polyester, blend and silk thread for quilting. Earlier this week, they were selling 220 spools for half price. Do not know if they still are. Also, they have a great e-newsletter. Alex Anderson also has a line of threads through them.

another great spot online to try for threads and other quilting notions also is sewthankful.com. They have lots of name brands and lots of sales. I've gotten quite a few things there.

Haven't read all the replies, so this may be redundant, but I like Guttermann's special quilting thread. (This is for hand-quilting; I don't do long-arm.) I get it at Jo-Ann's, either nearby or on the internet, when they're having 40%-off sales, or I have one of their multitude of discount coupons. You can google them. Good luck!
