Both are very, very nice! I'm sure he will be pleased with either way you put it together. Once it is quilted and the binding put on (may I suggest a dark binding? - the frame around the picture) it will really "pop"

i think the colors are very soothing. I like #2 a lot, but I would use 3 of the blocks on the bottom row on the left side to 'finish' the left-side blocks. You would have a block left over that you could use in the backing.

Hi Puddin, I like #2 the best, but I think they both look great. Your FIL will love either one - if he is in a nursing home or extended care facility, please put his name on the label so it doesn't get lost!!
