I like the first layout as the eye follows the zig zag. Very "in" right now...and the colors are nice and peaceful.

I like the second one - I don't often see the rail fence laid out like that. I see light, medium and dark. A dark border will pull the dark out of the quilt. He will love it.

I love the soft colors and both layouts! I think if I had to pick a favorite, I would pick #1.
