Lovely projects! I would indeed border the existing blocks with the same or similar (maybe go to a solid if you don't have same) about 2-3 times as wide as the narrow sashing.
Keep in mind that when we design a border we have to add that to both sides, so if you want to add 20 total inches to the top, that is just 10 inches per side.
Then yes, extend with the uncut butterfly focus fabric if you have enough, or space it if you don't. You can slash that fabric and put in similar or contrasting tones (like if you have the alternate fabric from the kaleidoscope) in wide or small amounts, either neatly and carefully or improvisationally. I tend to do bias angles in such situations. Sometimes you have to cut it down and alternate to get the size you want, 4-patches or 9-patches to the rescue.
If you don't have near enough of the butterfly fabric, you can just piece random squares of colors maybe 3 deep (so like a 9-patch but no light/dark cross or corners, all fabrics roughly the same). If I recall, you are trying to avoid stash but you might be able to find a pre-selected group of fat quarters in just the right tones.

Thanks for the advice. I knew ya'll would come to the rescue! I like the idea of putting them on point; Will try that for next one. I like QuiltnNan's idea to use the sashings and butterflies. I'll post a pic when finished.
