I am so glad you posted this because I really don't see what all the hoopla is about the OBW. My husband said why would you cut up a piece of fabric just to make it look like a piece of fabric. Hey congratualtions on fishing it though. Sounds like a few of us have left our OBW languishing in our cupboards or design walls. Would like to see a picture however.

I have made a One Block Wonder. I think the thing that is wrong with the pattern is they tell you to use the width of the fabric and it makes it really hard to line up the repeats of the fabric. When I make a Wackeroo Quilt (stack and Whack) they had us cut the fabric on the fold first and then line up using the 22 inches of fabric. This is a lot easier than doing it the other way around. You really need a place to lay the quilt out for when you are sewing it together and you need to number your rows. Plus you need to use lots of pins when you are sewing it. I laid mine on the bed as I was working on it while we were down south in our 5th wheel.
Another thing I found out on the OBW was that your pattern should not be real dense. My black and white did not have a lot of background and it makes it really busy. I think the nices ones I have seen are the ones with more background color and less pattern. I hope you can understand what I am saying about this.
As for the bargello I made one of those as well. Again you need a place to lay the pieces out and make sure to number the rows. We lived in a bigger house that that time and I laid it down on our basement floor and I would go over and pick it up the pieces as I was sewing it together.

I feel much the same about the QAYG Kansas Sunflower. Is there a mistake I didn't make? Is there a technique for setting the blocks with sashing I haven't tried? It looks so fabulous but I'm sick of it. Just have to put the rows together now and DD will take it away. We should have a "I'll finish yours if you'll finish mine". Or maybe, I'll burn yours if you'll shred mine.

I did a stack and whack years ago out of the most ugly fabric, but it had good repeats. It turned out super. Maybe you would like it better finished?
I'm working on one now....determined to finish it before I can start anything else.
Let me just say that sharing the steps here made the process very fun. That being said...in the time I sit at the machine and stare at my design wall at the FIVE HUNDRED SEVENTY SIX triangles...well, I get overwhelmed and have considered shoving it in a box, too. I really don't like the fabric, but I like the hexes, and as the rows are coming together, I like the quilt better.
I know I want to try it again. Later. With fabric I actually like. LOL.

I love my OBWs and have made at least 6. I am sorry you did not like it. For the last 4 months, I had a quilt on my design board that was making me nuts! I finally took it down because I could not bear to look at it any more. I know that in a few months, I will find it again and finish it but just not today. Relax, take it off your board and give it a chance to grow on you again.
