Never really thought about it before, but probably about 50-50.
Sometimes I'll buy several fabrics that I think will look great together in a particular quilt (that fabric may end up being used, piece by piece, in several other projects); or
Sometimes I'll find a pattern/picture then end up using a completely different fabric than I intended to use.
I'm convinced that my stash has grown through this inability, on my part, to use material for its intended purposes. I just keep changing my mind about what fabric goes with what quilt.
This may or may not be true, but I've got fabric stashed all over my house and this is my rationale when some poor soul dares to question my need for so much fabric. LOL LOL

I like to buy fabric by the yards and then match them with a pattern I like.
