I tried the glue method and it worked great. I'll continue to use it to avoid pinning. It ended up looking great especially the corners. I had to use the Missouri quilt binding tool for the place where you join the binding because I did not understand the Sharon schambers description but otherwise it went really well.

I do this also. And use glue sticks to hold applique pieces down instead of pinning or using Heat and Bond.

I use the stick glue and use the iron to set. No issues with the machine needle when I sew it down.

i use elmers school glue, roxannes basting glue and glue sticks.. All of them work great for me... the roxannes glue has the tiniest tip so that works great for smaller pieces and hard to reach areas(mitered corners) and the glue and sticks i use for binding and larger appliques... LOVE IT...
