Invisible thread
#31
I used polyester invisible thread to stabilize my quilts with STID for quite a long time but then I tried Bottomline thread from Superior and I really prefer it. It hides easily, is flexible and much easier to see when I am doing the quilting. Another great plus is that it is much easier to tie off and bury the ends. I use a beige and light gray for this purpose. Sometimes I use this thread for decorative quilting also.

I use invisible thread a lot (in the bobbin too) and I like it. Buy a good quality one like YLI. Caution: when winding the bobbin use a slower speed if you can and don't overfill. Loosen the top tension too. Good luck!

It also depends on the machine. I have found that my older (1975) Pfaff, had no problems with invisible thread...but my new computerized machine hates it! Bobbin is not even an option for this machine, but with loosening the tension, I can get the computerized machine to sometimes work well with top stitching. In general, I have had to just switch to regular thread, and get over myself.

I took 2 workshops with Edyta Sitar a few years ago and she recommended using the Aurifil invisible - Aurifil is one of her sponsors so she uses it on many of her quilts. She gave me a sample spool to try - she said to use as my top thread with cotton thread in the bobbin. I have used a few spools since then and I like how it sews, looks and wears - have not had any problems. I have both the clear for lights and colours and smoky for darker fabrics.

I usually do hand piecing, but on the quilt I am working on now, I do not have the time to do that, so I machine appliqued using invisible thread. I have regular thread in my bobbin. I found that when I had the invisible thread in my bobbin (using Sulky thread), it got horribly tangled up. After I switched to the regular thread in the bobbin, it moved along quite well, and you can't see the stitching. This is not something I am ever likely to do again, but it did save me from switching thread colors on each block.
