I use bamboo sticks used for shish kabobs. You can get a large package of them at the dollar store. Chopsticks work too. Some are larger than others, so it depends on what size bias strip you want as to size of stick. Wooden dowels would work on handbag straps.

Zip ties work great. In fact this product:

Is really nothing more than heat resistant zip ties (also called cable ties or wire ties) in various widths with the locking part cut off. Most zip ties are made to withstand the heat because they are used to tie bundles of wiring near engine motors (Especially if you go to an auto parts store for them.) But I don't iron over them. I just use them to turn the bias tube so the seam ends up on the bottom. I press the tube as I slide it off of the zip tie.

I either just fold them or use the bias strip makers you pin to the ironing board and pull through and press as you go. They are not expensive and you can get them in any sewing stire in different sizes.

I have been feeling this way since almost the beginning of this thread. What's going on? Zip ties, zip strips, bias tape makers, bamboo sticks, bias tube pressers, metal sticks, plastic sticks. ? ? ? ? I hope someone can straighten us out.!
It's beginning to sound like an episode of I Love Lucy!

I think this Youtube video demonstrates how you use the bias bars:

And this one demonstrates how to use the bias tape makers:
